Estate Deductions (Applied Before Share Calculation)

The following are deducted from the gross estate in order, before Faraid shares are calculated on the remaining distributable amount:

  1. Funeral expenses — Kafan (shroud), burial costs
  2. Outstanding debts — All financial obligations of the deceased
  3. Unpaid mahr — Deferred dower owed to the wife
  4. Wasiyyah — Bequest to non-heirs, limited to 1/3 of estate after above deductions

Key Faraid Concepts

Awl (Proportional Reduction)
Applied when prescribed shares exceed 100% of the estate. Each share is reduced proportionally. Example: Husband (1/2) + 2 Sisters (2/3) + Mother (1/6) = 8/6, reduced to 3/8 + 4/8 + 1/8.
Radd (Surplus Redistribution)
Applied when prescribed shares total less than 100%. Surplus is redistributed to non-spouse quota holders proportionally. Under Hanafi rules, spouses are excluded from Radd.
Hajb (Blocking)
Closer heirs can exclude more distant heirs. Example: Son blocks Son's Son; Father blocks Grandfather and Full Brother. Six heirs can never be blocked: Son, Daughter, Father, Mother, Husband, Wife.
Asabah (Residuary Heirs)
Heirs who receive the remainder after fixed-share holders. Priority order: Son → Son's Son → Father → Grandfather → Full Brother → Paternal Half-Brother → and so on through male agnates.

Scholar Verification

After calculating shares, you can optionally submit your case for review by a qualified Mufti or Alim. The scholar reviews via a secure magic link, verifies or adjusts the calculation, and uploads a signed & sealed letterpad document. You're notified at each step via WhatsApp.
